Machine concept

A closed frame design forms the basis of the WV 8000. The translational axes (X, Y, Z) are mounted on this frame and move the work spindle. The rotary axes (A, C) are located in the workpiece, allowing traverse paths of 1,500 x 1,250 mm in a very small, space-saving footprint. At the same time, it provides ample access for the operator and for loading and unloading. The position of the control cabinet is freely selectable according to the layout.

Structure of the WV 8000 D designed as a two-chamber machine with positioning of the machining spindle.

Closed frame construction with traversing gantry beam

  • rigid, vibration-damped, steel-shell machine bed filled with Hydropol®
  • symmetrical design for thermal stability and optimum distribution of forces
  • direct measuring systems in all axes
  • gantry beam of the three-axis unit filled with Hydropol®
  • gantry drive in master-slave configuration (pinion/rack) drives the gantry with zero backlash and high rigidity
  • a slim cradle table bridge enables machining from the rear facilitating complete machining in a single set-up
  • ample access from two sides, separate for operator and automation

Compact with one chamber and high agility

  • large, flexible machining centre that can be used for small batches
  • optimum addition for odd number of spindles

Two spindles and two independent chambers for maximum productivity

  • two independent 5-axis machining centres combined in one machine bed
  • compact design enables material flow optimised layouts

Machining units

The work spindles are proven components from HELLER’s modular system. For the machining of structural components, the spindles must be able to guarantee a high cutting volume, allow the use of long tools and be able to accommodate angular heads. With the internal coolant supply, all spindles are MQL compatible.

Proven machining units from HELLER’ modular system

  • available with HSK-A 63 or HSK-A 100 tool shank
  • slim spindle neck with inline direct drive, optimised for perfect reach into the workpiece
  • permanent water cooling ensures thermal stability and precision

HELLER attachment head support (MSK)

  • for the use of attachment heads, e.g. angular heads
  • enlarged support basis with three-point rest
  • integrated torque input and media transfer

Tool management

The machining of structural components with complex shapes frequently requires very long tools. Therefore, the tool magazine of the WV 8000 can accommodate tools of up to 700 mm in length. Tool change takes place directly during pick-up. Combined with high axis dynamics, this results in short chip-to-chip times.

Tool magazine with short tool change times available in various sizes.

Fast tool provisioning

  • two magazine sizes available with either 36 or 45 magazine positions, optionally for HSK-A 63 or HSK-A 100 tool shanks
  • the short magazine chain and the suspended tool arrangement ensure short tool change times
  • tool length up to 700 mm is possible
  • max. Ø without free adjacent position: 120 mm
  • max. Ø with free adjacent position: 200 mm

Tool breakage monitoring

  • accurate tool length monitoring via NC axis and high-precision photocell
  • inspection is cycle time neutral during tool change

Workpiece management

Machines of the WV 8000 series are fully prepared for automated operation. A comprehensive media interface for complex clamping concepts enables the use of hydraulic and pneumatic clamping systems as well as various sensing concepts. Additionally, electronic signal transmission solutions are available all the way to the fixture.

Optimised for the machining of large structural components

  • workpiece loading directly into the clamping fixture
  • wide, powered work area door designed as NC axis
  • easy to automate
  • low machine bed ensures easy access for maintenance

Digital interface

  • direct IO-Link transmission of individual sensor values or Profinet transmission to implement complex clamping and sensing concepts on the machine table

Supply and disposal

Where milling takes place, chips are produced – and this is especially true for the WV 8000. The machining of structural components generates a high volume of bulky chips. These are efficiently removed via a wide scraper conveyor. Another key aspect is the machine’s centralised media supply. It plays a crucial role in layout and facility planning. Due to the well thought-out design, all relevant areas are easily accessible to maintenance personnel. This ensures quick and hassle-free servicing.

Easy access to the WV 8000’s media supply and chip removal via chip conveyor.

Centralised media supply areas

  • easy maintenance through optimum accessibility: all supply units at a glance
  • centralised compressed air conditioning
  • seal air and targeted blow-off of interfaces ensures long-term smooth machine operation
  • media interface for hydraulic workpiece clamping within easy reach
  • compressed air connections on operating and loading doors

Effective tool cooling and work area extraction per spindle

  • internal coolant supply (IKZ) through the tool and additional blow ring on the spindle
  • proven Lubrix single-channel system incorporated as standard
  • internal coolant supply (IKZ) with up to 3 pressure levels and variable lubricant content, freely programmable via NC program
  • exhaust air purification by electrostatic filter

Fast chip removal

  • free chip fall below the spindle and quick evacuation from the work area
  • central chip conveyor for quick disposal, optionally to the left or right
  • scraper belt conveyor flanged directly to the machine bed to minimise space requirements
  • inner work area panelling made of stainless steel for long term durability

Control technology

Efficient operation is essential in everyday work. The modern high-performance Siemens SINUMERIK ONE control system with optimised user interface provides reliable support. It features intuitive operation, easy programming, helpful cycle support and a clear display of all relevant information.

Intuitive control panel of the WV 8000 based on SINUMERIK Operate.
